ISCU celebrates World Teachers’ Day with a massive Chess in Schools promotion

Since 1994, UNESCO has been celebrating annually the World Teachers’ Day on the 5th of October. Currently, there are more than 100 hundred countries all over the world that celebrate World Teachers’ Day – the way teachers are transforming education and also reflect the support teachers need to deploy their talent and vocation.

To mark this special day, the International School Chess Union (ISCU) launched a large project to promote chess and to show teachers’ contributions to introducing chess in schools.

As a result, there were over 3,000 pupils in 45 cities in 4 countries participating in chess activities on the 5th of October. In Romania, over 2,900 children in 39 cities participated in the Chess in School national project led by Prof. Vlad Ungureanu, with the support of the Romanian Chess Federation and main sponsors Rompetrol and Aqua Carpatica. In Bulgaria, two schools in Sofia “Damyan Gruev” and “Zahary Krusha”, with the contribution of Radislav Atanasov, took part. In Ukraine, Lviv School no.7, with the contribution of Volodymyr Grabinsky, and Mexico, NC school from Ciudad de Mexico, with the contribution of Juan Carlos Ramirez Medina, also participated.

ISCU would like to thank all teachers and chess promoters who contributed to this event.

In July 2023, ISCU organized the 1st edition of the International Schools Chess Festival, under the auspices of FIDE, in Ploiesti, Romania, with 75 school teams from 7 countries attending, and is preparing for July 2024 the 2nd edition of the International Schools Chess Festival.
